It makes me laugh how many people come over from Brighton and talk about 'protecting the environment' over here.

Brighton is so much more prosperous than us because it has the benefit of

- a bypass
- a fast road to London
- an international airport 20 minutes up the road.

Furthermore the rubbish gets sent over here to landraise at Pebsham - this 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' that you are trying to protect; the sewage gets pumped from Brighton to a massive new plant at Peacehaven; and the electricity gets generated at a nuclear power station along the coast at Dungennes.

Together with the landraise, the industrial scale sewage plant at Pebsham and the burnt out incinerator, we are the rubbish dump of Sussex. Yet when somebody does something to try to re-generate the area, somehow the 'environmental concerns' are too great.

We are also in the frame for another landfill at Ashdown Brickworks, which will happen Link Road or no Link Road.

Until we resolve the Glyne Gap bottleneck it will never be possible to create an efficient and integrated public transport system because buses will have to go a long way round and will get stuck in traffic.

The railway only goes runs within a few hundred yards of the seafront with large parts of both Hastings and Bexhill some distance from a station.

Unless you build a new road how could you get easily by public transport from

(1) Sidley to Conquest Hospital?
(2) Hollington to Little Common?
(3) Pebsham to Hastings Crematorium

This either means bus services going through the bottleneck and taking a roundabout route or two buses and a train which would also be very time consuming due to the number of interchanges.

While building a station at Glyne Gap may be part of a longer term plan, it is not a realisitic proposition without the Link Road. It would be a recipe for gridlock.

Why don't you also call on Norman Baker to

- Grass over the A27 Lewes and Brighton and Hove bypass
- Reduce the A23 south of Pease Pottage to a single carriageway and divert the traffic back through all the towns and villages.

If this sounds absurd, it is esentially what you are suggesting the people of Hastings and Bexhill continue to put up with.

While I accept that a sizeable minority don't want the Bexhill - Hastings Link Road, a larger number of people do. The BHLR is part of the solution in that it will allow the creation of new bus routes along the new road AND the installation of bus lanes along parts of the A259.

Without the BHLR, attempts to improve public transport are doomed to failure. The railway doesn't run where the population is, while an efficient bus network can never be realised so long as the A259 Bexhill Road/Glyne Gap bottleneck remains.

I partially agree with Steve, while the BHLR is not the solution, a solution must be found. Currently there is only one road and one rail link between the towns.
I remember not many years ago the idea of a 'string of diamonds' along the south coast; unfortunately there is no 'string'.
My idea would be to use the money to double track and electrify the marshlink so javelin trains could run to Hastings. I would also add in the Willingdon chord (mentioned in railtracks key improvements) to create a faster service to Brighton, (fast trains from Ashford to Brighton). This would create some inward investment as commuting would be easier. Next I would look at reinstating the trams as a guided bus way like in Crawley; there is space to put a guided bus way along most of the De La Warr road to Glynde Gap, and then onwards from the BoPeep to the Old Town. This would create a much faster bus service between the two towns. Finally, I would look at a new Bypass (dual cariageway) that went further north, taking a gradual curve from the Lamb Inn to the Guestling Thorn bend, and combine that with the completion of the Polegate bypass to Alfriston.
All this would mean, it would be faster to get in and out of the area, potentially becoming a hinterland of Ashford with all the investment that would bring.
